lyrics

The sun does arise,
And make happy the skies.
The merry bells ring
To welcome the Spring.
The sky-lark and thrush,
The birds of the bush,
Sing louder around,
To the bells’ cheerful sound.
While our sports shall be seen
On the Ecchoing Green.

Old John, with white hair
Does laugh away care,
Sitting under the oak,
Among the old folk,
They laugh at our play,
And soon they all say.
‘Such, such were the joys.
When we all girls & boys,
In our youth-time were seen,
On the Ecchoing Green.’

Till the little ones weary
No more can be merry
The sun does descend,
And our sports have an end:
Round the laps of their mothers,
Many sisters and brothers,
Like birds in their nest,
Are ready for rest;
And sport no more seen,
On the darkening Green.

EL PRADO DE LOS ECOS
Se eleva el sol
y los cielos se vuelven dichosos;
resuenan alegres las campanas
como bienvenida para la primavera;
la alondra y el zorzal,
las aves de los arbustos,
trinan estrepitosamente
ante el sonido jovial de las campanas,
mientras nuestros juegos son vistos
sobre el Prado Resonante.

El viejo Juan, de cabellos blancos,
ríe y aparta sus preocupaciones,
sentado bajo el roble,
entre los demás ancianos.
Se ríen de nuestros juegos
y poco después todos dicen:
"Así, así se disfrutaba
cuando nosotros, niñas y muchachos,
en nuestra juventud éramos vistos
sobre el Prado Resonante".

Hasta que los pequeños, ya exhaustos,
no pueden seguir la diversión;
el sol va descendiendo,
y nuestros juegos se acaban.
En torno al regazo de sus madres
muchas hermanas y hermanos,
como pajaritos en su nido,
se disponen al reposo,
y dejan de verse los juegos,
en el Prado oscurecido.
